Alumni Spotlight: Kevin Wright

Kevin Wright has been a part of the Kiwanis family for a large portion of his life. Now a Kiwanian—in fact, he is president of his club—Kevin was first introduced to the organization when a teacher at Advanced Technologies Academy suggested he join Key Club. Kevin admits he was a bit skeptical after attending the first meeting, but decided to give it a shot anyway. All it took was a bit of time and a couple service projects for him to fall in love with Key Club.

“I’m 24,” he says now, “and I still keep in contact with folks I’ve known since I was 15 because of friendships that were built in Key Club.”

A deeper involvement

Kevin attended Northern Arizona University, where he joined Circle K. Kevin believes that his involvement with CKI has prepared him for his career as a rising professional in student affairs and higher education administration.

While attending NAU, Kevin became involved with a student-led initiative to help fight student hunger—Louie’s Cupboard. But this wasn’t an issue his CKI club could approach with a simple service project. “After a few meetings, numerous donations, both in the form of food and money, and countless hours of collecting, processing, scheduling, and organizing,” Kevin says, “Louie’s Cupboard was born.”

Kevin earned a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies, with a minor in Sociology. Because of CKI, he also gained some valuable experience for his post-graduation life.

“I was able to develop skills in event planning, conflict resolution, Robert’s Rules of Order, leadership development, leadership training, budgeting, and public speaking,” he says.

Even as undergraduate, Kevin knew that student affairs and higher education administration were his passion. Undergraduate degrees are not available for student affairs, however, so he decided to get a Master’s Degree in his true passion. Kevin recently earned his Master's in Student Affairs Administration from the Graduate School of Education and Counseling at Lewis and Clark College.

Becoming a Kiwanian

A long-term career goal for Kevin is to serve as a College President and to further advocate for affordability and accessibility for students looking to pursue higher education. “I love assisting people with tapping into their greatest potential to lead and serve others,” he says.

Today,  Kevin is president of the Southwest District Young Professionals eKiwanis Club. For Kevin, an eKiwanis club was perfect: He knew he wanted to stay involved in the Kiwanis family, but he wasn’t quite sure of his post-graduation plans. And he has been able to remain involved due to the club’s online culture—even though he has moved from the Southwest District..

“I was able to contribute to the success of this club all the way from Portland,” Kevin says. “And I’ll continue contributing as a club director, even though I’ll be relocating to Cincinnati.”

Kevin has been motivated to stay involved with Kiwanis because of the family feeling that comes with membership, “There has never been a time where when I needed something and a fellow member of the Kiwanis family wasn’t there to support me,” he says. In fact, Kevin recommends Kiwanis club membership to all alumni.

“Don’t hesitate,” he says. “Just make sure you join the club that’s right for you!”
